The San Antonio Spurs will waive guard Jimmer Fredette on Wednesday, making the former No. 10 overall draft pick a free agent, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
As part of his partially guaranteed deal to go to camp with San Antonio, the Spurs paid Fredette $500,000 for the season.
For the 6-foot-2 Fredette, finding an ideal fit for his size and shooting ability is uncertain.
After failing to gain traction with the Sacramento Kings – who acquired him from the Milwaukee Bucks in a 2011 draft-day deal – Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans, the Spurs had hoped Fredette could fill a need for perimeter shooting.
Fredette, a prolific college scorer, was the NCAA's consensus national player of the year for BYU in 2011.
Fredette could head overseas to try to rebuild his NBA candidacy.
The Spurs also plan to waive St. Bonaventure center Youssou Ndoye and 2013 second-round pick Deshaun Thomas of Ohio State, sources said. Ndoye, a 7-foot project, plans to join the Spurs' NBA Development League franchise in Austin, sources said.
San Antonio needs to make one more roster cut to get to 15 for the start of the season.
