Receiver Percy Harvin didn't make the trip to London with the Buffalo Bills, and then Rex Ryan raised an eyebrow or two when he said it was for "personal reasons."
Harvin does have a hip injury; that has been documented. He has been sitting out Wednesday practices all season as he manages the issue, but he practiced in full last Thursday and on a limited basis last Friday. The change from full to limited on Friday indicated that something might have happened in practice, but Harvin was listed as questionable on the injury report officially giving him a 50-50 chance to play against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was inactive.
There were reports that Harvin could miss significant time with the hip injury, and he didn't make the trip to London. Neither did defensive lineman Kyle Williams, who is out with a knee injury. But receiver Sammy Watkins, who had a walking boot and crutches when he arrived in London, made the trip.
According to an NFL Network report, there's nothing going on with Harvin aside from the hip injury. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said that Harvin's absence is not due to a personal or travel issue. He stayed back to "figure out his hip injury."
Hmmm. Then Ryan must have been terribly off when he said all of these things on Wednesday, according to the Buffalo News:
• "Percy Harvin has a non-injury related ... he's pretty much excused for personal reasons," Ryan said. "So I'll just leave it at that."
• "He had the hip, before, we knew he was battling the hip and things, but this is a personal issue," Ryan said. • "No, I think right now it's a personal thing right now," Ryan said. "And that's where it is."
•(When asked if it as a long-term or short-term issue, according to the Buffalo News) "I'm not going to touch any of it," Ryan said. "I'll just leave it where it is right now."
Does that sound like a man who was confused about why Harvin didn't make the trip? If Harvin missed because of the hip, someone better tell Ryan because multiple times he had a chance to say that and said the opposite. Either way, the injury-ravaged Bills will be without one of their key playmakers on Sunday. Probably two of them if Watkins doesn't make a tremendous recovery. We'll have to see how long Harvin is out once the Bills get back to the United States.
