Kentucky freshman Skal Labissiere has been deemed eligible by the NCAA to play in the upcoming 2015-16 season, sources told Yahoo Sports on Friday.
Labissiere received paperwork clearance on Friday after the NCAA had investigated him for his relationship with his Memphis-based guardian Gerald Hamilton, sources said.
Labissiere – a projected top pick for the 2016 NBA draft – moved to the United States from Haiti. He played high school basketball in Memphis, Tenn., and has listed Hamilton as his guardian.
Labissiere, 19, is a 6-foot-11 center with the potential to be one of the nation's best players this season. Kentucky coach John Calipari has said he was unworried about Labissiere's eligibility ruling and expected him to play once the Wildcats started the season on Nov. 13.
Labissiere impressed NBA scouts during the Nike Hoop Summit in April.
"In my eyes he's going No. 1 next year because he's just so coordinated, so fluid, so skilled," one NBA scout told Yahoo Sports' Marc Spears then. "He's not a great shooter now, but you can see he's going to be a very good shooter. He has good balance, good footwork. All the building blocks to be a really good big guy."
