A few hours before the Redskins' game at the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, Williams tweeted: ''Happy to announce I will be a redskin for the next 5 years. This is a dream come true.''
The team and Williams' agent did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Williams' announcement comes a little more than a week after the Pro Bowler sat out an exhibition game during which quarterback Robert Griffin III was sacked three times by Detroit.
After the game, Washington coach Jay Gruden said Williams had an injured right foot.
The 27-year-old Williams is entering his sixth NFL season after Washington drafted him No. 4 overall out of Oklahoma.
