We're probably beyond the point in which we'd be surprised by anything that happens with the Washington Redskins, but the Robert Griffin III concussion story this week has been weird.
Griffin got pounded in Washington's previous preseason game, and came out of the contest after one final hit left him laying on the field with the trainers coming out to look at him. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said after the game Griffin had a concussion. Then all of a sudden he was back at Washington's next practice. It got a little weird when Griffin dodged questions on Thursday about if or when he suffered a concussion. Odd. But the team announced Thursday that Griffin was cleared by the neurologist and would play Saturday, Mike Jones of the Washington Post reported.
Well, then on Friday the Redskins announced that after "further review by neuropsychologists" that Griffin does have a concussion, won't play this week and will sit another week or two before returning.
Oh.
The statement came from NFL independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtzke. This is via Mike Jones of the Washington Post:
"Per discussion with Neuropsychologists and with Anthony Casolaro M.D., we had anticipated yesterday that the patient would be cleared for full participation in gameday this weekend; however, upon further scrutiny of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from gameplay this weekend and be retested in one-two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to gameplay can be made."
Obviously the Redskins didn't plan on that happening. This was the Redskins' Twitter post about two hours before announcing he would be shut down for a week or two:
When Griffin returned to practice on Monday, Gruden said he would be "checked by a neurosurgeon" later in the week to determine if he would be cleared to play. Griffin reportedly practiced fully but with no contact on Monday.
The Redskins haven't exactly been cautious with their quarterback this preseason, keeping him in for that second preseason game when he took some big shots behind a struggling offensive line. Now, with the timeline given on Friday, there should be some question about Griffin's availability for the season opener.
The Redskins will be happy when the preseason is over and the regular season starts. Maybe.
