The way Max Scherzer had been pitching lately it seemed like just a matter of time before he made history.
He came oh so close: Scherzer was one strike away from a perfect game on Saturday. Scherzer had retired 26 straight Pittsburgh Pirates when Jose Tabata came to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the top of the ninth. Scherzer got the count to 2-2 on Tabata but then hit a leaning Tabata with a pitch and allowed his first baserunner of the afternoon. He rebounded quickly by getting Josh Harrison to fly out to left field and walked off the mound with a no-hitter and a 6-0 Nationals win.
Never watched the end of a brilliantly pitched no-hitter and felt a twinge of disappointment. Scherzer deserved perfection. Stupid elbow.

Scherzer had 10 strikeouts in the game, his sixth double-digit strikeout performance of 2015, and has been dominant all season in his first season in Washington, entering Saturday's game with a 1.93 ERA. In his last start he struck out 16 in a one-hit complete game shutout, recording one of the highest Game Score numbers of all time.
Scherzer's no-hitter is the second of the MLB season. San Francisco's Chris Heston pitched the first on June 9 against the Mets. It's also the second no-no in Nationals' franchise history. Jordan Zimmerman threw one on the final day of the 2014 regular season.
