It was a pretty productive Sunday from Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez. The 27-year-old belted three home runs during the team's 12-4 rout of the New York Yankees.
Martinez got going early. His first blast came during his at-bat of the contest. In the first inning, Martinez smashed a 90 mph sinker from Masahiro Tanaka out to left center for a solo shot.
He would add another solo home run in the fifth. This time, Martinez took advantage of a 76 mph curveball from Tanaka.
His third home run of the contest would come in the following inning. With a man on first, Martinez got a hold of a 93 mph fastball from Danny Burawa and sent it into right for a two-run shot.
Martinez would get chance at another long ball, but couldn't come through. In the eighth inning, he flew out to right field after working a six-pitch at-bat from Jose De Paula.
Martinez finished the contest 3 for 5, with three runs scored and four RBI. With the performance, he increased his slash line to .275/.333/.516 on the year. Martinez has hit 16 home runs.
All in all, not a bad way to spend your Sunday. While Martinez was unable to tie the major-league record for home runs in a single game, three dingers is a fine consolation prize.
