After starting only two games for the Houston Texans, Ryan Mallett's season reportedly is done. He suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and, per the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, will be shut down for the remainder of the year.
The report later was confimed by other media outlets in a conga line thereafter.
Mallett was promoted to the starting lineup and played well in a win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 but struggled in the Week 12 loss to the Bengals. The man he replaced, Ryan Fitzpatrick, now will re-enter the starting lineup for the 5-6 Texans, whose playoff hopes are dim now at best.
The Texans also could turn to fifth-round pick Tom Savage, who reportedly has struggled at times since joining the team, down the stretch. In Week 13, the Texans play the Tennessee Titans, and they have two more games remaining against the last-place Jacksonville Jaguars in the final five weeks of the season.
Mallett's future is unknown, as he heads into free agency in the offseason. He still appears to be the best option for the team as far as who is currently on the roster, but head coach Bill O'Brien certainly could look to make a clean sweep and look elsewhere for his team's next starter.
In two starts (three games) this season, Mallett completed 41-of-75 passes (54.7 percent) for 400 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. In Sunday's loss, playing through the injury for part of the game, Mallett completed 21-of-45 passes for 189 yards and a pick.
