Rex Ryan is again contributing to the NFL's version of the "swear jar."
He won't be dumping in chump change, either.
The New York Jets head coach is being fined a whopping $100,000 after he dropped an unmistakable F-bomb in the moments after his team's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. The news was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Friday afternoon.
The fine is so large because the NFL considers Ryan a repeat offender. He was fined $75,000 in 2011 after swearing at a heckler and $50,000 for flipping the bird at a MMA event in 2010.
One hundred large probably isn't the type of cash Ryan wants to be parting with, especially with his job prospects so uncertain. It does demonstrate, however, just how angry he was with Mike Mitchell of the Steelers after the Pittsburgh safety jumped the line during the Jets' "victory formation."
Ryan strode on the field and directed his ire toward Mitchell that CBS cameras caught and aired.
Though it didn't take an expert-level lip reader to discern what Ryan had said, he was asked after the game to reveal what he had yelled at Mitchell.
"I think I was saying, 'Thank you,'" Ryan said to reporters. "Obviously, I've got to do a good job of controlling my emotions. Things happen. I'm sorry if I offended anybody."
Turns out Ryan offended the NFL to the tune of $100K. It's unknown how much Ryan makes on his current deal. Estimates on the deal he signed in 2010 pegged his annual salary at about $3 million.
