The St. Louis Rams put out a clear message that they are back at square one at quarterback.
The Rams have benched rookie Austin Davis for veteran Shaun Hill. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the news. Hill will start against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Rams are 3-6 and not going to the playoffs in a loaded NFC. If they had any hope that Davis could establish himself as an option to start in 2015, they'd let him get the reps now. Hill will be 35; he's not the answer next season either. But, like when the Washington Redskins benched Kirk Cousins, the Rams have apparently decided to move on.
Maybe Davis can reestablish himself in the Rams' long-term plans, but Wednesday's move wasn't a good sign of that. Hill suffered a thigh injury in the Rams' opener and Davis took over from there. Davis showed flashes of promise but turned the ball over too often, and last Sunday was the last straw. The Rams led the Arizona Cardinals going into the fourth quarter, but Davis had three turnovers, two that were returned for touchdowns.
Hill might give the Rams a better chance to compete now, but the Rams are back at the beginning at quarterback. Sam Bradford remains on the roster, but he is coming off ACL surgeries two straight seasons and has never shown he's an above average quarterback when healthy. Davis isn't the answer. Hill is a good backup but that's probably his limit.
It's amazing that with all the extra draft picks the Rams stockpiled through the Robert Griffin III trade, and their own high draft picks the past few years, that they have no real answer at quarterback.
The Rams have plenty of talent on the roster. But a big question at the most important position.
