Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had a bad outing Sunday, throwing two interceptions and taking six sacks — against a statistically bad defense — in a home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Griffin started his postgame news conference in the right way, shouldering the blame, saying, “I have to do better.”
RG3 then said the Redskins "can’t throw knives and stab each other in the back."
Right before he threw knives at his teammates and stabbed them in the back (about the 2:09 mark of the video above).
“It takes 11 men," Griffin said. "It doesn’t take one guy, and that’s proven. If you want to look at the good teams in this league and the great quarterbacks, the Peytons and the Aaron Rodgers, those guys don’t play well if their guys don’t play well. They don’t.
"We need everybody. I need every one of those guys in that locker room, and I know they’re looking at me saying the same thing.”
Sure, Griffin has a point. Those six sacks were not all his fault, as the offensive line did not block well, and the defense allowed rookie wideout Mike Evans to roast it repeatedly. But Griffin also overthrew DeSean Jackson twice (how does that happen?) and misfired on several other passes, including those two picks.
The other thing with the Peyton Mannings and Aaron Rodgers? They not only make those throws more often than not, but they have earned the right — in those rare occasions that they happen — to call out teammates because of their consistently great play.
Griffin is not there yet. Nor has he figured out yet what it takes to lead.
Is he wrong in some of his criticisms? No, but his leadership took another blow after yet another Redskins loss.
