According to local reports, Rivera heard smoke alarms going off about 4 a.m. and got everyone out of the house safely. The two-alarm fire brought an estimated 55 firefighters to the scene of Rivera's home, though damage appeared minor. The firefighters cut a hole in the roof of the three-story brick home and were able to contain the fire and rescue the family's pets. The fire took about an hour to contain.
"It's a busy week ahead for the city of Charlotte, including this family, who is devastated by the fire," Charlotte Fire Capt. Rob Brisley said at the scene. "Early indications are this is an accidental fire."
Panthers officials say Rivera was sticking to his normal routine on Monday while the family secured alternative living arrangements. Smoke and water damage has made the home unlivable for the moment.
The Panthers will travel to Seattle to meet the Seahawks in divisional play this weekend.
