The Broncos are reportedly set to officially tab Gary Kubiak to replace John Fox as head coach.
According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos and Kubiak are nearing a four-year contract.
Kubiak just finished his first season as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. One week ago Sunday, he announced he would be staying in Baltimore. However, the following day, Fox and Denver parted ways, and Kubiak — a former teammate of Broncos G.M. John Elway and a former Denver assistant — became an obvious potential head coaching candidate.
And now, Kubiak looks ready to take the job.
The 53-year-old Kubiak was 63-66 as the Texans’ head coach from 2006 through 2013, leading Houston to AFC South titles in 2011 and 2012. However, the Texans faltered in his final season, and Kubiak was let go with three games left in the campaign.
Still, Kubiak’s offensive acumen has long been respected, and his work in Baltimore drew praise, especially in the postseason, when the Ravens’ attack shined in a victory at Pittsburgh and a narrow loss at New England.
With Kubiak in the fold, the focus turns the roster with which he will work in 2015. The future of Peyton Manning will be the major storyline to watch. The club will also have to ante up to retain star wideout Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas.
