1892 - Pudge Heffelfinger receives $500 as the first professional football player.
1920 Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis is elected as the first baseball commissioner.
1931 - Maple Leaf Gardens opens in Toronto to a defeat, as the Blackhawks beat the leafs, 2-1.
1950 - Gene Roberts of the NY Giants sets an NFL rushing record with 218 yards against the Chicago Cardinals.
1952 - The Chicago White Sox place Jim Rivera on a 1 year probation after being cleared of rape.
1953 - US District Judge Grim, rules that the NFL can black out TV home games.
1955 - Eddie Arcaro, Earl Sande and George Woolf are the first inductees into the Jockey Hall of Fame.
1979 - Tony Franklin of the Philadelphia Eagles kicks a 59-yard field goal.
1992 - NY Yankee pitcher Steve Howe is reinstated for the 8th time.
1995 - Dan Marino breaks Fran Tarkenton's NFL all-time passing yardage mark of 47,003.
