Jim Durham, ESPN’s lead radio play-by-play voice on the NBA, died Sunday at his
home in Tomball, Texas, the network announced today.
No cause of death was listed for Durham, 65. A former broadcaster for the
Chicago Bulls and Dallas Mavericks, Durham had broadcast NBA games on ESPN Radio
since 1996. He worked his last game, the Tuesday night season opener between the
Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, with Dr. Jack Ramsay, his longtime partner.
Durham was the voice of the Bulls from 1973-91, a span that included Michael
Jordan’s first seven games. ”The voice of champions,” Jordan texted Melissa
Isaacson of ESPN Chicago. “I will miss him.”
He also broadcast Chicago White Sox TV games in 1989-90 and Houston Astros TV
games from 1983-85. He broadcast Mavericks games on TV from 1993-2001 and,
besides ESPN, worked for NBC, CBS and Turner Sports.He is survived by his wife, Helen, three children and several grandchildren
