Tom Brady was just chatting with Derek Jeter, one mega-celebrity chewing the fat with the other, when Brady offered up his true candor on the AFC championship loss to the Denver Broncos.
“[This season] ended a few weeks too early,” Brady said in a video posted to The Players’ Tribune’s Facebook page. “Just blew it. We had a good chance.”
The New England Patriots lost 20-18, failing to complete a two-point conversion in the final minute of the game that could have allowed the game to go to quarterback. Brady was off early, throwing two interceptions, and he faced a fierce rush all game, getting hit a whopping 20 times.
Brady and Jeter can relate. Both have ties to Michigan — hence their presence at the Wolverines' Signing Day festivities — and are connected (Brady married, Jeter engaged) to supermodels. Both also are world-class athletes. Rough lives they lead.
But that doesn't mean they don't exhibit regret or disappointment. Brady seemed to show exactly how he felt in a rare moment of celebrity candor, just as — many surmised — Peyton Manning was when he told Brady and Bill Belichick that Sunday's Super Bowl might be his "last rodeo."
We don't get these moments very often, but they are interesting to see. Now we have to wonder if Jeter told Brady back in 2004 that the New York Yankees "blew it" in the ALCS, up 3-0 over the Boston Red Sox.
