Free agent J.J. Hickson is nearing a deal with the Washington Wizards for the remainder of the season, league sources told The Vertical.
The Wizards have yet to finalize the pro-rated veteran's minimum contract with the 6-foot-9 forward, but he is expected to sign in the next day or two, sources said.
In his eighth NBA season, Hickson appeared in 20 games for the Denver Nuggets before being bought out on Friday. The Nuggets waived Hickson and Steve Novak – who signed with Milwaukee on Monday – to clear two roster spots.
Hickson, 27, was the 19th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2008 NBA draft. He emerged as a talented, young asset for Cleveland, but was traded to Sacramento in 2011 and was waived in 2012. He then signed with Portland and had his most successful season with the Trail Blazers in 2012-13, averaging 12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in 80 games.
The Wizards are 25-29 entering Tuesday’s game against New Orleans and are 3½ games behind Chicago for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.
