The new, chic way to go for star players, apparently, is to tell close friends and family your retirement plans, let them leak it to media and then face speculation about your future.
That's what's going on with Calvin Johnson right now. And it's now also reportedly what's happening with Peyton Manning — that according to an NFL.com report.
Yes, there was that moment on the field after the AFC championship game in which Manning told New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick that the Super Bowl might be his final rodeo. We all saw that and lip-read it, and it was far from surprising.
But now Ian Rapoport is reporting that Manning has told friends that this indeed will be it for the 39-year-old, sure-fire future Hall of Fame quarterback. As he and the Denver Broncos prepare to face the Carolina Panthers, speculation over Manning's career decision has — and will — run rampant.
Would Manning drop a bomb and announce his retirement this week? Immediately after the game, win or lose? We just don't know, but it is sounding more and more like this horse's career might last only one final game.
Too bad there's no studding career for old QBs, eh?
