Texas A&M coach expects star QB Kyler Murray to play in bowl game

Rumors of the transfer of quarterback Kyler Murray from Texas A&M might have been a bit premature.
Coach Kevin Sumlin told media following Wednesday’s bowl practice that he expected Murray, who was not at practice while he worked on personal matters, to be back with the team on Thursday and to start the Music City Bowl against Louisville on Dec. 30.
Sumlin even went so far as to say Murray would participate in the Aggies spring practices and participate with the baseball team.
This was an about-face from the rumors that were coming out of College Station Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Reports that Murray was unhappy were rampant and that a meeting with the Murray family did not go well.
Whatever Sumlin or other members of the Texas A&M coaching staff might have said to Murray and his family apparently worked, but perhaps we’ll know more when/if Murray returns to practice on Thursday.
Losing Murray would have been disastrous for the Aggies, especially on the heels of Kyle Allen, the team’s other five-star quarterback, announcing his intention to transfer. At that point, the Aggies would have only one scholarship quarterback remaining, junior college transfer Jake Hubenak, and there are no quarterbacks committed in the Class of 2016.
Sumlin also noted he’s still evaluating his staff in response to questions about offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and that no changes in staff roles are planned for the bowl game.
