FSU QB Everett Golson doesn't travel to Peach Bowl

Everett Golson won't be playing in the Peach Bowl.

The Florida State quarterback did not travel to the game, set to be played on Dec. 31.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, a Florida State spokesperson said Golson didn't take the trip because of a personal issue. Sean Maguire is likely to start for the Seminoles vs. Houston.

Fox Sports reported Golson was dealing with the death of a family member.

Golson transferred to Florida State in the spring from Notre Dame as a graduate transfer. He beat out Maguire for the starting quarterback job at the beginning of the 2015 season after it looked like he'd be backing up Malik Zaire if he had stayed at Notre Dame.

Had Golson not transferred to FSU, Maguire was in line to succeed Jameis Winston. Maguire started for Winston in 2014 against Clemson, a game the Seminoles won. Winston missed the game because of a team suspension.

Golson started the first seven games of the season and missed two games with a concussion. After he returned, he lost his starting job to Maguire. Golson had three turnovers against NC State (a game Florida State came back and won with the help of Maguire's two scores) and officially lost the starting job the following week. Maguire started the team's final two games of the season.

Maguire, a junior, is 90-145 passing for 1,128 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions in 2015. In his lone season at Florida State, Golson avoided the turnover problems that plagued him in his final season with the Irish. He finishes 2015 with a statline of 147-219 passing for 1,778 yards and 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Golson was the quarterback when Notre Dame went to the BCS Championship Game vs. Alabama after the 2012 season. He missed the 2013 season because of academic issues and returned in 2014.
