Toronto pitcher Marcus Stroman is close friends with former teammate David Price, even calling him a role model, but Price is with the Boston Red Sox now and Stroman wants his buddy to be treated with some hostility when he returns for games at Toronto next season.
Stroman has been training at Duke University and told Arden Zwelling from Sportsnet.ca he would be fine if Blue Jays fans booed Price when he comes to town as a member of the American League East rival Red Sox.
“I think it’d be cool if they booed him,” Stroman told Sportsnet “He’s on a division rival—you have to boo him. There’s no friends when it comes to competition.”
Boston lured Price with the largest free agent contract ever given to a pitcher and setting up future matchups with Stroman when the two clubs meet.
Stroman likes the idea of facing his friend on the diamond and his first opportunity will come early. Toronto will host Boston in the final two games of spring training at Olympic Stadium April 1-2 and then host the Red Sox again a week later in the home opening series April 8-10.
“I’m happy he’s in Boston—I’ll get to see him all the time,” Stroman told Sportsnet.ca. “And I get to pitch against him. It’s awesome. I get to pitch against one of my role models, one of my mentors and one of my buddies. It’s going to be fun. I’ve been texting him about it. It’s going to be a fun rivalry for a bunch of years.”
