Quarterback Geno Smith reportedly won’t move too far for his next NFL job. It appears he’s moving from the New York Jets to the New York Giants to back up Eli Manning.

Smith endured a rocky start to his career — from being benched to being decked by a teammate — after being a second-round pick in the 2013 draft. He also hasn’t played that well, with 28 TD passes and 43 turnovers in his 33 games with the Jets.
At 26, Smith said he wanted to have a shot at starting elsewhere, but that won’t happen anytime soon behind Manning, who has started 199 straight games, which is the most among active quarterbacks.

Smith also is coming off a torn ACL that ended his 2016 season, so the medical evaluation could be critical to making the deal final. Last we heard, Smith did not expect to hit the field until training camp. The other quarterbacks on the roster for now include Ryan Nassib, Josh Johnson and Keith Wenning.
Smith has some work to do to get his career back on track. Getting punched by then-teammate IK Enemkpali was Smith’s most infamous distraction, but it was hardly his only one. Smith also was kicked off of a plane after an interaction with a flight attendant, benched for missing a team meeting before a game in San Diego and was heard swearing at a fan.
But the still-young former No. 39 overall pick also has some untapped potential if he can get healthy, work hard and get in line with the Giants’ program.
