Flames sign Team USA world junior champion goalie Parsons

The Calgary Flames have inked goaltending prospect Tyler Parsons to a three-year entry level contract, the team announced Sunday.
The 19-year-old, in his third season with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, was selected No. 54 overall by Calgary in the 2016 entry draft, and already has a world junior gold medal and Memorial Cup championship on his resume.
Parsons not only knows how to win, he’s proven to be clutch in the biggest, most pressure-packed games that a junior hockey player can be part of. Most recently, he was the gold-medal winning goaltender for Team USA at this year’s world juniors, posting a .917 save percentage in five games and shutting the door on Team Canada in the final — stopping all five shots he faced in the shootout.
Parsons also reached the pinnacle of major junior hockey when he backstopped London — a club that featured Leafs rookie Mitch Marner, and current Flames freshman Matthew Tkachuk — to a Memorial Cup championship. In the final, Tkachuk scored the overtime winner, while Parsons made 29 saves and was named the top goaltender of the tournament.
The native of Chesterfield, Michigan has a career-high .924 save percentage while posting four shutouts this season with the Knights, who currently sit with 99 points and a record of 46-15-3-4 —good for fourth spot in the OHL’s Western Conference.
