Christian McCaffrey told reporters Thursday that he feels overlooked and underestimated. At the 2017 NFL Combine, he showed that he has every bit the athleticism of a first-round pick.
“I feel like a lot of people don't give me credit for my skills and talents,” McCaffrey said. “That's just the way it is. But I also don't really care too much. I don't feel like I'm crazy disrespected. I have a chip on my shoulder at all times.”
At 5’11, 202 pounds, he’s not a tiny running back at all. But he’s not quick or compactly built as the 5’10, 210-pound Dalvin Cook, and he’s not the tank that Leonard Fournette is at 6’0, 240 pounds. But he blew away Cook and Fournette in just about every drill in Indianapolis.
McCaffrey ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds, just ahead of Cook’s 4.49 and Fournette’s 4.51. And his bench press numbers were lacking. But in agility and explosion drills, McCaffrey dominated.
His 37.5-inch vertical was far better than Fournette’s 28.5 or Cook’s 30.5 jumps. He also posted a time of 6.57 seconds in the three-cone drill, one of the best ever marks in the drill.
Then, when he was done putting the rest of the running back class to shame in agility drills, McCaffrey did wide receiver drills. And dominated those, too.
Maybe the only thing that didn’t go right for McCaffrey on Friday was that his shirt had his name spelled wrong (McCaffery).
McCaffrey has been considered a fringe first-round pick, while Cook and Fournette have been battling to be the first running back off the board. But McCaffrey’s big showing in Indianapolis, coupled with Fournette’s disappointing one, could mean the Stanford running back starts getting more of the attention he thinks he deserves.
