The Atlanta Hawks claimed guard Jose Calderon on waivers, bringing on the veteran guard for the playoff push, league sources told The Vertical.
Calderon, 35, gives the Hawks an accomplished perimeter threat to complement their guard rotation of Dennis Schroder, Kent Bazemore and Tim Hardaway Jr.
Calderon had agreed to a contract buyout with the Los Angeles Lakers because of an agreement to sign with the Golden State Warriors. After the Lakers waived Calderon, the Warriors had to change course on the franchise’s final roster spot in the wake of Kevin Durant’s knee injury. Golden State chose to sign free agent Matt Barnes, signing and waiving Calderon in rapid succession because Golden State management wanted to honor its financial commitment to Calderon.
The Hawks claim of Calderon spares the Warriors any financial responsibility to him. Atlanta will pay $247,000 to Calderon for the remainder of the season, and he’ll be eligible to be on the team’s playoff roster.
Calderon has played with six NBA teams, including Toronto, Detroit, Dallas, New York and Los Angeles. He is a career 41 percent three-point shooter in the NBA. Calderon is a three-team Olympian for Spain.
