Dodgers honor iconic broadcaster Vin Scully before 67th home opener

Those Los Angeles Dodgers fans lucky enough to have a ticket to the home opener Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks were treated to a pre-game celebration and tribute to legendary broadcaster Vin Scully they won’t soon forget.
Unfortunately for Scully and those fans, the Dodgers’ bullpen continued to struggle several hours later giving up the lead it inherited from starter Kenta Maeda and Los Angeles lost 4-2.

Scully announced last year this would be his final season calling games. His 67th home opener began with a video narrated by fellow iconic broadcaster Al Michaels featuring some of Scully’s most memorable moments from 66 years calling Major League Baseball games.

Michaels then introduced an assortment of notable names from Dodgers lore who were in attendance to honor Scully, including Tommy Lasorda, Orel Hershiser, Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Don Newcombe, Rick Monday, Steve Garvey, Fernando Valenzuela, Rick Monday, Ron Cey and Magic Johnson representing the club’s ownership group.

Of course, they took a selfie.

Fans gave Scully a lengthy ovation and those Dodgers luminaries presented him with a baseball signed by all of them. Scully, 88, wasn’t able to make it back to the broadcast booth before the first pitch of the game but he soon settled in and sounded in midseason form.
It’s amazing that Scully is still at the top of his game at 88 years old and it’s shame we won’t be hearing that voice calling any more double plays, high fly balls and strikeouts when this season ends.
