1941 - NY Giants name Mel Ott as player-manager, replacing Bill Terry.
1948 - Stan Musial is picked as the NL MVP.
1951 - Philadelphia sets NFL record of 25 1st-Downs rushing.
1954 - Frank Selvy of Milwaukee sets then NBA record of 24 of 26 free throws.
1962 - The 50th anniversary of the CFL Grey Cup goes into overtime in Toronto, Ontario as Winnipeg beats Hamilton, 28-27.
1974 - Cowhide, rather than just horsehide, can now be used to make baseballs.
1981 Fernando Valenzuela of the LA Dodgers wins the NL rookie of the Year award.
1991 - Bobby Bonilla signs record $29 million 5-year contract with the NY Mets.
1993 - Houston Rockets tie an NBA record with a 15-0 start of the season.
