John Madden underwent open heart surgery

Beloved Hall of Fame coach and former broadcaster John Madden recently underwent open-heart surgery to repair blockages, the NFL announced on Thursday.
The surgery took place in San Francisco, and Madden went home from the hospital on Wednesday.
In a statement, league commissioner Roger Goodell said:
“I spoke to John yesterday. He sounds great, but is frustrated about being on injured reserve for the time being. He is anxious to return to action soon doing the important work he does for our game. He’s a tremendous fountain of ideas and we can’t wait to get him back. We are all pleased to know that John’s procedure was successful and wish him a speedy recovery.”
As head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969-78, Madden compiled an impressive 103-32-7 record and won Super Bowl XI. He retired from coaching and immediately went into broadcasting in 1979, and remained in the booth until 2008. Madden worked for all four major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox), and his enthusiastic delivery endeared him to fans. A new generation became familiar with Madden through the video game series bearing his name.
