Immediately after Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey, talk of a rematch became the hot topic. While both UFC president Dana White and Holm said after the fight that a rematch made sense, despite the definitive finish, it wasn't until Thursday's media blitz that White confirmed such plans.
“Me and Lorenzo (Fertitta) should probably lose our promoter's license if we didn’t make that rematch,” White said on ESPN radio's Mike & Mike show, as he confirmed plans to make the rematch. “Yeah, that fight's going to happen. I don't know when, but that's the fight that will happen.”
At the UFC 193 post-fight press conference, Holm didn't hesitate when asked whether or not Rousey deserved an immediate opportunity to get the belt back.
“I think a rematch makes sense for sure. I’ve been on the losing side of a fight and wanted a rematch, wanted to avenge my loss,” said Holm. “With a champion like Ronda, who has gone out of her way, above and beyond to do great things, absolutely she deserves a rematch. I think a rematch is just unspoken common sense to me.”
White was in full agreement with Holm's assessment on Thursday.
“Ronda Rousey has gone undefeated, taken the sport to another level, and was beating the best women in the world in 14 seconds or 30 seconds, so she deserves a rematch. Holly agrees she deserves a rematch, and we'll figure it out.”
With Rousey committed to non-fighting obligations for the next several months, a likely target would be UFC 200 next summer, but it will likely be a while before when know the details of the rematch.
