According to ESPN, Spikes, who was cut by the New England Patriots on Monday as the investigation into the incident began, was issued a citation that charges him with speeding, negligent driving, leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injuries and failing to stay in marked lanes.
The 27-year-old Spikes will be summonsed to appear in Wrentham District Court at a to-be-determined date.
Spikes’ Mercedes was found on I-495 in Foxborough around 3:20 a.m. Sunday morning and police say he crashed into the back of an SUV, injuring a man, a woman and their 12-year-old son. Police say their injuries are minor.
The on-board assistance service in Spikes’ car contacted him after it detected a crash. According to police, the driver responded by telling the operator that the car hit a deer.
Police who responded to the call of an abandoned car said there was no evidence it hit a deer.
The incident comes only a few weeks after the Patriots re-signed Spikes, who spent the 2014 season with the Buffalo Bills. Prior to his season in Buffalo, Spikes played the first four seasons of his career for the Patriots.
