As the Los Angeles Lakers maneuver to free $24 million-plus of salary cap space for summer free agency, the franchise is unlikely to exercise the option on forward Jordan Hill’s contract for the 2015-16 season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Lakers are not obligated to make a final determination on the $9 million owed on Hill’s contract before June 30, but momentum is strong that they’ll allow Hill to enter into free agency, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
For Hill, who turns 28 in July, there promises to be a significant market of suitors, which could include the Lakers themselves should they fail to lure their A-list free-agent targets. Los Angeles wants to pursue Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge, Cleveland’s Kevin Love and Miami’s Goran Dragic among others who could be available on the market.
Hill, who can play power forward and center, has the ability to defend power players inside and deliver low-post scoring and rebounding. Hill has provided inside stability for the Lakers, averaging 12 points and 7.9 rebounds in 57 starts this past season. Hill spent the past three-plus seasons with the Lakers, after starting his career in New York and Houston.
