1894 - The International Olympic Committee is founded at the Sorbonne,
Paris, at the initiative of Baron Pierre de Coubertin..
1917 - Ernie Shore replaces Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth with a runner on,
he throws him out & retires all 26 he faces for a perfect game.
1918 - Boston Red Sox Dutch Leonard's 2nd no-hitter beats Tigers, 5-0.
1925 - Art Modell, owner (Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens,
Modells Stores), (d. 2012) is born.
1927 - Lou Gehrig hits 3 HRs in 11-4 victory over Red Sox.
1930 - Chicago Cubs beat Philadelphia Phillies 21-8.
1932 - Lou Gehrig plays 1,103rd successive game in a NY uniform,
equaling Joe Sewell's record with one team (Cleveland).
1939 - Bronko Nagurski beats Lou Thesz in Houston, to become wrestling champ.
1940 - Wilma Rudolph, St Bethlehem Tenn, runner (Olympic-3 gold-1960) is born
1961 - Cubs Ernie Banks ends his 717 consecutive-games-played streak.
1962 - Larry Doby retires from the Cleveland Indians to play in Japan.
1963 - NY Mets Jimmy Piersall hits his 100th HR, he circles bases backwards.
1969 - Joe Frazier TKOs Jerry Quarry in 8 for Heavyweight boxing title.
1971 - Phillies Rick Wise no-hits Cincinnati Reds, 4-0.
1972 - President Nixon signs act barring sex discrimination in college sports.
1973 - Phillies Ken Brett 4th consecutive game HR in which he pitched.
1979 - LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers star football player is born.
1985 - Laffit Pincay Jr becomes 2nd jockey to win $100 million.
1988 - Charlotte Hornets & Miami Heat begin their NBA expansion draft.
2002 - Pedro 'El Rockero' Alcazar, Panamanian boxer (b. 1975) dies.
2003 - Barry Bonds steals second base against the Los Angeles Dodgers,
becoming the first player in MLB history to have 500 career home runs
and 500 career steals.
2005 - 59th NBA Championship: San Antonio Spurs beat Detroit Pistons,
4 games to 3. MVP: Tim Duncan (his third), for San Antonio.
2007 - Rod Beck, American Major League Baseball relief pitcher, dies at 38.
Although no cause was ever listed it is believed Beck's death was drug related,
cocaine was found in his home and bedroom.
