1939 - Lou Gehrig, 36, is elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame.
1947 - Johnny Bench, baseball catcher (Reds) is born.
1956 - Larry Bird, West Baden, Indiana, NBA star 
(Boston Celtics, 12-time NBA All Star) is born.
1978 - Islander's Mike Bossy's 1st career hat trick.
