MLB Thursday Headlines

---The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent pitcher Edwin Jackson to a four-year, $52 million deal, according to multiple reports. Jackson, 29, went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 189 2/3 innings with the Washington Nationals in 2012, after signing a one-year, $11-million deal with them. The Nationals didn't make a qualifying offer, so they won't receive draft-pick compensation. The right-hander has played for seven teams, starting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003. He has a 70-71 career record with a 4.40 ERA.

---Free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski reportedly has agreed to a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers. The deal hinges on a physical set for Friday, CBSSports.com and MLB.com reported. Terms were not available. Pierzynski is expected to compete for the starting catcher job with Geovany Soto, who was acquired last July from the Chicago Cubs. The 35-year-old Pierzynski has played 15 seasons, including the last six with the Chicago White Sox. Last season, he hit .278 with 27 home runs and 77 RBIs. He also has thrown 24 percent of the career base-stealers he has faced.

Carlee Soto, Victoria's sister, tweeted the news. "Derek Jeter just called my mom!!!!! Thanks Vicki, she needs it thank you @yankees this meant a lot to my mother and all of us," the tweet read. Soto's cousin, James Wiltsie, told the New York Daily News that Soto was a big Yankees fan. Victoria Soto died Friday as she tried to deflect bullets from gunmen Adam Lanza. She was 27.

---The Baltimore Orioles signed outfielder Adam Greenberg to a minor-league contract, according to a MASNsports.com report. Greenberg's major-league career nearly ended seven years agao when he was hit on the head with a pitch in his first plate appearance. The Marlins signed him in September of last season and gave him an official big-leauge at bat. He struck out against eventual National League Cy Young Award winner and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

The Miami Herald reported that the sides were close on a one-year, $2.75 million contract. Polanco became a free agent when the Phillies declined their half of the $5.5 million mutual option after the regular season. The 37-year-old hit 15 doubles and batted .257 in 328 plate appearances in 2012.

---Free-agent lefty Tom Gorzelanny agreed to a two-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report. The deal is contingent on a physical, which is scheduled for Friday. Gorzelanny spent 2012 with the Washington Nationals, but was non-tendered by the team instead of offering arbitration. The 30-year-old could be used as a starter or reliever for the Brewers. He worked out of the bullpen in 2012, but has started in the past. Gorzelanny posted a 2.88 ERA in 72 innings last season, spread out over 45 games.
