1924 - NY Giants become first team to appear in 4 consecutive World Series.

1925 - Harry Heilmann's 6 hits edges Ty Cobb .393 to .389 as the batting champ.

1930 - A's Jack Quinn, 46, pitches 2 innings o become the oldest to play in a World Series.

1951 - In game one of the World Series, Giants' Monte Irvin steals home in 1st inning.

1953 - Jim Peters runs world record marathon (2:17:39.4).

1964 - Gino Cappelletti kicks 6-of-6 field goals against Broncos.

1969 - Baseball's first divisional playoff games, Mets beat Braves 9-5 & Orioles beat Twins 4-3 in 12 innings.

1991 - NHL New York Rangers trade Bernie Nichols to Edmonton for Mark Messier,

A's & Rangers switch places as Oakland captures AL West Crown

The Oakland Athletics won the division title with another improbable rally in a season full of them, coming back from four runs down and a 13-game division deficit to stun the two-time defending league champion Texas Rangers 12-5 on Wednesday. Josh Hamilton dropped a fly ball in center field for a two-run error that put the A's (94-68) ahead 7-5 in a six-run fourth inning. The A's only added to Texas' troubles the rest of the way.
Oakland pulled off another remarkable performance in a season defined by thrilling walkoffs, rallies and whipped-cream pie celebrations by a team that was never supposed to be here.
A club that trailed Texas by 13 games on June 30. A club with a $59.5 million payroll, lowest in baseball. General manager Billy Beane found ways to get a blue-collar franchise back to the playoffs for the first time since being swept by Detroit in the 2006 AL championship series.

Cabrera wins Triple Crown

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera became the first player in 45 years to win baseball's Triple Crown on Wednesday night, joining an elite list that includes Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig.

Cabrera's milestone wasn't official until the Yankees pinch hit for Curtis Granderson in their game against the Boston Red Sox.  Granderson had homered twice to reach 43 for the year, tied with the Rangers' Josh Hamilton and one shy of Cabrera.

Cabrera went 0 for 2 against the Royals before leaving in the fourth inning to a standing ovation. He finished the regular season with a .330 average, four points better than the Angels' Mike Trout, his biggest competition for MVP.  Cabrera was the runaway leader with 139 RBIs.

Boston's Carl Yastrzemski was the previous player to achieve the Triple Crown in 1967.

1919 - Reds Adolfo Luque is first Latin player to appear in a World Series.

1920 - NFL (then American Pro Football Association) plays its first game.

1940 - Reds beat Tigers ending NL's 10-game World Series losing streak.

1947 - With only 1 out to go, Yankees Floyd Beven gives up a double breaking up his World Series no-hit bid, it scored 2 runs and he lost the game.

1948 - The NFL becomes the first sport televised as the sports game of the week.

1950 - Baseball rules Phillies lefty Curt Simmons cannot play in the World Series despite his being on furlough from the Army.

1965 - Whitey Ford notches his 232nd career win while becoming the Yankees winningest pitcher.

1976 - Hank Aaron singles in his last at bat and drives in his 2,297th run.

1981 - Milwaukee Brewers (since 1970) and Montreal Expos (1969) clinch their first ever post season.

1982 - Scott Weiland runs Detroit marathon backwards in less than 5 hours.
