Manager Joe Maddon said La Stella, 27, a valuable left-handed hitting infielder who was placed on the temporarily inactive list after declining to report to Triple-A Iowa on July 29, will report to Double-A Tennessee.
La Stella will bat second and play second base Tuesday night for the Smokies.
Maddon made the announcement of La Stella's return on his weekly radio show on WSCR-AM 670.
La Stella batted .295 in 51 games for the Cubs this year, 22 as a starter. Twelve of his 31 hits were for extra bases.
In 2015, his first year with the Cubs, La Stella appeared in 67 games and batted .269. La Stella also went 6-for-14 as a pinch-hitter, and he started at third base in the National League wild-card game at Pittsburgh.
