1869 – Kasturba Gandhi, Indian wife of Mahatma Gandhi (d. 1944) is born.
1881 – Spelman College is founded in Atlanta, Georgia as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, an institute of higher education for African-American women.
1890 – Rachele Mussolini, Italian wife of Benito Mussolini (d. 1979) is born.
1906 – James Anthony Bailey, American businessman, co-founded Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (b. 1847) dies.
1909 – The city of Tel Aviv is founded.
1928 – Ethel Kennedy, American philanthropist; wife of Robert F. Kennedy is born.
1930 – Anton LaVey, American occultist, founded the Church of Satan (d. 1997) is born.
1951 – Korean War: President Harry Truman relieves General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of overall command in Korea.
