Hold your kids a little bit closer tonight, and tell your wife you love her, because disaster can strike at any time.
Washington Nationals infielder Yunel Escobar didn't expect to be completely destroyed by this Noah Syndergaard pitch, but that's precisely what happened.
There's a lot happening here. Escobar tries to get around on a Syndergaard fastball, and just come to a full stop mid-swing. The bat flies off, presumably into the stands, and Escobar goes down as if he's just been shot.
We can't joke too much, actually. Escobar left the game after the play. He was replaced by Dan Uggla. We're obviously hoping it's nothing serious and that Escobar can return quickly. We don't want to make light of a potentially serious injury.
At the same time, we've never seen anything like this. We've seen hitters look foolish on pitches before, but we've never seen a guy just collapse after taking an awful swing and losing the bat.
Hopefully, Escobar is fine and won't need to miss much time. In a few days, maybe we'll all be able to laugh this one off.
