It seemed this week that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston had moved into pole position to be the No. 1 pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but a report about his shoulder might put that plan on hold.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Winston is having tests to determine why he is experiencing weakness in his throwing shoulder. Mortensen reported that Winston had a electromyography, a test that checks the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them.
George Whitfield, a quarterbacks coach who has been working with Winston to prepare for the combine, said he was surprised by the news and thought it was just precautionary, and part of the combine process in which all prospects have a number of medical tests done. He said Winston threw for 90 minutes on Tuesday and had no issues, never complained about his shoulder and was doing fine physically in the entire lead-up to the combine.
"It's a little bit of a shock," Whitfield said about hearing the news. "We threw hard and long like he always does. He looked good. He's only been getting stronger."
Whitfield's lack of knowledge of anything wrong with Winston's shoulder should lessen the concern, considering he has worked closely with Winston since the college season was done and Winston never said anything about a shoulder issue. But if Winston has something wrong with his shoulder, the Buccaneers could easily switch course and look at Oregon's Marcus Mariota with the top pick. For now everyone will just wait and see if there's anything that would cause a change in Winston's draft stock.
