1934 - Armas Toivonen becomes the first European marathoner (2:52:29:0).
1965 Sandy Koufax pitches his 4th no-hitter, a perfect game versus the Cubs (1-0).
1971 NHL great Gordie Howe retires.
1987 - Larry Bird, of the Boston Celtics, begins his NBA free throw streak of 59.
1987 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 4,500th batter of the season.
1991 - Mike Tyson indicted for rape of Desiree Washington.
