When Luke Kuechly was shown on Thursday night’s broadcast in tears, sobbing on the field and then taken off on a cart to the locker room, everyone expressed immediate concern for the Carolina Panthers’ star linebacker.
Kuechly suffered a concussion. By now we all know how serious that is.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Friday that Kuechly is in the concussion protocol. He mentioned no other injury and offered no other details.
While we’ve seen players get emotional after suffering obvious season-ending injuries, like a torn ACL or broken leg, it’s rare to see a reaction like Kuechly had to a concussion. The injury came when he tried to tackle New Orleans Saints running back Tim Hightower and was hit from behind when he was knocked back. Kuechly missed three games last season after suffering a concussion.
Kuechly’s teammate Thomas Davis posted a picture with him after Thursday’s game, and Kuechly appeared in good spirits.
We’ll see how Kuechly recovers from this concussion. Suffering the injury was clearly a tough moment for him.
