Phillies trade reliever Jimmy Cordero to Nationals for PTBNL

Five days after designating him for assignment, the Phillies traded reliever Jimmy Cordero to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later or cash.
Cordero, 25, was acquired by the Phillies from the Blue Jays at the 2015 trade deadline for Ben Revere. If he makes the Nationals, he'll be Revere's teammate.
Cordero arrived with potential and a triple-digit fastball, but he was unable to stay healthy with the Phils. A shoulder injury in spring training 2016 kept Cordero out until July 1.
He proceeded to make a combined 18 appearances with Single A Clearwater, Double A Reading and Triple A Lehigh Valley, posting a 5.64 ERA. He struck out only 12 batters in 22⅓ innings.
The Phillies DFA'd Cordero last Friday to open up an additional spot on the 40-man roster. Alberto Tirado, the other reliever the Phillies acquired from Toronto in the Revere deal, was one of the 11 players the Phils added to the 40.
When a player is designated for assignment, the team has 10 days to place him on waivers, trade him, release him or outright him to the minor leagues.
Relievers with big-time velocity are always in demand, so it's not a surprise that another club took a chance on Cordero.

Buchanan released
Right-hander David Buchanan, who was DFA'd along with Cordero last Friday, was released by the Phillies on Wednesday. He's 8-17 with a 5.01 ERA in 35 career major-league starts.
