A promising NFL Thanksgiving slate might take a major hit, unless Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck gets cleared quickly from a concussion.
The Colts announced that Luck is in the concussion protocol. He was not at practice on Monday. It’s always concerning when a key player is in the concussion protocol, but especially so when it’s your do-everything quarterback and you play on Thursday. The Colts will play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night.
Scott Tolzien is the only other quarterback on the active roster and would presumably start for the Colts in a prime-time Thanksgiving game if Luck isn’t cleared by then. That can’t be good news for NBC, which will broadcast the game.
The announcement was a major surprise because Luck finished Sunday’s game. With 2:35 left, he made a clutch throw to T.Y. Hilton on third down that put the game away. Luck took a knee three times after that to kill the rest of the clock.
With the short week, there’s no guarantee that Luck will be cleared by Thursday. At this point the Colts have to assume that Luck won’t be available, and if he is it’s a bonus.
