Mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters can be a little emotional following a loss.
Especially one that sends them into retirement, as was the case with former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, who was upset by Raquel Pennington at the UFC 205 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend in New York.
Watch her retirement speech here.
That’s probably why promotion president Dana White didn’t bat an eyelash when “Cupcake” told him to go spit on the heels of his request to be hospitalized, thanks to damage incurred from her three-round war with “Rocky.”
From the UFC 205 post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting).
"Her and I had a little bit of a thing tonight. She was refusing to go to the hospital and I'm like, ‘you're going to the hospital.' She's like, ‘fuck you, I don't work for you anymore.' So, yeah. I was like, that's a good point, but you need to go to the hospital. Then I had to start begging, ‘if you go to the hospital tonight, I'll get you another job doing something else, and I could be your boss again.' So, she went, yeah, she has to go. She's upset and she's very emotional, but I care about Miesha a lot, and I think she's going to do just fine in her life after fighting."
Job security FTW.
The loss to Pennington was the second straight for Tate (18-7). After winning the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 196, “Cupcake” was dethroned by Amanda Nunes at UFC 200, before falling to “Rocky” in the “Big Apple.”
See it again here.
At just 30 years old, there is an outside chance Tate will come back to combat sports somewhere down the road, but for the time being, we can scratch this fight off her list of future goals.
