Centre Court ticket holders certainly got their money’s worth Wednesday at the All England Club.
Just after Roger Federer came back from a two-set deficit to punch his ticket to Wimbledon’s semifinals, Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battled for nearly four hours in another five-set showdown.
This time though, the comeback could not be completed, as Murray emerged with a 7-6(10), 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-1 win.
The first set featured a tense tiebreak similar to the one that occurred in the fourth set of Federer’s match against Marin Cilic, as neither player wanted to give his opponent an edge. Finally, after 21 games, Murray took the set with a backhand volley winner.
Winning the tiebreak fired up Murray, who stormed out to take the second set and put the Frenchman on the ropes.
Like Federer before him, Tsonga began to claw his back into the match in the third set. Tsonga stole a break, raced out to a 3-1 lead and closed out the set to extend the match.
Tsonga continued his rally in the fourth set, breaking Murray at 4-4 and then holding serve to force a decider.
But Murray was in no mood to let Tsonga steal his spot in the semifinal, racing through the fifth set to win 6-1 and take the match.
