Chris Sale scratched from start after destroying throwback uniforms

The relationship between the Chicago White Sox and ace Chris Sale took a bizarre turn on Saturday.

In a statement released before Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, the White Sox announced that Sale had been scratched from his scheduled start after he was involved in what the team says was a “non-physical clubhouse incident.”

The White Sox did not offer any further details, other than to say the incident was under investigation and that Sale had been sent home.

Well, Yahoo Sports’ own Jeff Passan has been doing some investigating as well, and he now confirms that Sale was sent home after refusing to wear and later destroying the team’s throwback uniforms.

Given that Sale has been the subject of recent trade rumors, it would have perhaps been easier to understand if his anger was directed entirely at the front office. This is a little tougher to explain though, and may point to a larger anger issue.

Regardless, it’s noted that the incident should have no impact on his trade status one way or the other. The White Sox still want the farm if they’re going to trade him, and it’s still up to another team to match the asking price.

If nothing else though, the plot has thickened.
