If Cleveland Browns wanted to patiently wait for Johnny Manziel to play, that plan got thrown out the window in a hurry.
In the first quarter of the season opener, Browns starter Josh McCown tried leaping into the end zone, but he got hit from the side and violently spun around as he fumbled.
McCown was evaluated for a head injury, and never returned. Enter Johnny Football.
Whether you like or hate Manziel, he is interesting. And he got things going right away against the New York Jets. Manziel threw a 54-yard touchdown to Travis Benjamin coming in cold off the bench to give the Browns a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. The lead didnt hold, as the Jets ran away to a 31-10 victory.
Manziel looked good early in the preseason, and then he missed the final two preseason games with an elbow injury. He looked OK early.
Yeah, it wasn't pretty. That left-handed pass was just Manziel throwing a ball away, but he had a few other regrettable moments as the Jets defense got into a groove.
Manziel went 13-of-24 for 182 yards with a touchdown, interception and a lost fumble. it wasn't the type of performance that will have the Browns automatically benching McCown for the second-year former first-round pick, but depending on McCown's injury this week, they might not have a choice for Week 2.
