Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant is expected to miss twice as much time as first speculated after breaking a bone in his right foot in Week 1 against the New York Giants.
Citing multiple sources, NFL Network reported Sunday morning that Bryant underwent surgery this past week, but needed a bone graft, which means a longer recovery time. He broke the fifth metatarsal bone, and there was a screw inserted to aid the healing but he also needed a bone graft, a transplant of bone tissue.
Initially, it was believed Bryant would miss 4-6 weeks. Now, becasue he needed the graft, the timeline is 10-12 weeks.
The NFL Network report cited a surgeon well-versed in the procedure (but who did not examine Bryant), who explained a bone graft can be used to help the bone heal if there is a chronic component to the injury – for example, if it's an issue the player has had before. The surgeon said the operating doctor was likely worried about the bone healing on its own and made the decision to do the graft.
