St. Louis catcher Cody Stanley was suspended without pay for 80 games Saturday by Major League Baseball after a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.
Stanley was drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2010 amateur draft and played in the big leagues for the first time this season. He also failed a PED test in the minor leagues in 2012 and was suspended for 50 games.
This suspension will carry over to next season when he is unlikely to play until June. He tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.
Stanley, 26, spent most of this season at AAA Memphis. He batted .241 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs in 92 games with Memphis. He played in nine games with St. Louis this season making 10 plate appearances. He earned his first major league hit during a short stint with the Cardinals in April.
Losing Stanley obviously isn't a huge blow to the Cardinals, who boast one of the best catchers in the game in Yadier Molina, but it has to be disappointing to the organization to see one of its young players dealing with a second suspension and losing him for a significant portion of next season.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Stanley could be designated for assignment, allowing the team to activate reliever Matt Belisle from the 60-day disabled list.
