The vibe around the baseball team in D.C. these days is already not very positive. Bryce Harper may have just thrown some gasoline onto the fire.
A 8-5 loss to the New York Mets at home on Monday dropped the Washington Nationals to five games out of first place in the NL East. The game was tied 5-5 heading into the seventh, but the Mets scored three runs in the top half of the inning and held on for the win.
Harper, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, didn't like what he saw happen with the crowd after the Mets took the lead. Following in the footsteps of Jonathan Papelbon, Harper didn't mince his words when the topic of the fans came up after the loss.
Oh man. As much as fans enjoy telling other fans how they should act, they never like to have their own fandom questioned or criticized.
Harper was obviously speaking from a place of frustration after an uncharastically poor performance, but were his comments justified? Check out this tweet and accompanying picture from Newsday's David Lennon:
There were also reportedly a number of Mets supporters in the building, taking advantage of a holiday to watch their team play on the road.
It's just been that kind of season for the Nats. They entered 2015 with massive expectations, and while Harper has had a monster season and is the NL MVP favorite, it looks unlikely that they'll make the playoffs. I mean, that's pretty brutal, too.
